 #1 Make sure that your attic is well ventilated, taking the heat (140 degrees +) out of your attic will allow your HVAC system to do its job better. Even in winter months the attic must be properly ventilated, hot air holds moisture. Just cooling your attic can save you 20-40 % in your energy bills, and greatly increase your comfort level.

 #2 Insulate your attic with at least 20" of insulation the newer standard is R-30 plus. If you have an older house chances are your insulation is 6" or less around R-11 or R-15. It also makes sense to insulate your walls. If you have a flat roof with no attic and you are going to reroof you should add insulating sheets between the sub-straight and the decking.

 #3 Get new windows, if your windows are not double insulated replace your windows.

 #4 Solar electrical systems (PV Photo Voltaic ) work best on the roof, the solar panels collect the heat and sun's rays before they heat and hit your roof converting light into energy. Solar is not always a bright idea.
Without the government/utility incentives, solar does not always make sense. With the  incentives solar
is a good idea. Straight Purchase or Prepaid Leases are best. Be careful with PPAs Power Purchase Agreements. PPAs are 20 year contracts that have a fixed amount that you will pay for the power you
use or produce. Even if your house is vacant or if you use little or no power.
